The Power of Collective IDEATION & Problem Solving

FutureSYNC Consultants – May 2019
In our last blog, we touched on the importance of finding your Muse through challenges, set-backs, and pain in order to fine-tune and grow your creative thinking abilities as a leader. As neuroscience continues to unveil the incredible complexities of the brain, we are becoming more aware of the influential connections between “Collective IDEATION” and our problem solving abilities.
As a leaders, your employees and staff look to you to optimize business processes, methods, and work flow in order to operate within your organization’s “creative sweet spot”. In order to do so, you must also optimize the overall “thinking environment” within your culture. Your target is to the create space for harmonized and intentional thinking to occur. In essence, to normalize “how we think about, what we are thinking about”.
What we now clearly understand from neuroscience research, is that we are more creative and innovative within group settings than we are as individual contributors. An intentionally designed group configuration has the potential and power to create the relaxed physiological state known as “group allostasis”. Allostasis is the process by which a state of internalized, physiological equilibrium is maintained within the group itself—a vital state the frees our minds from self-preserving and self-indulgent thinking. This state provides the psychological safety factors that are the stimulus for Collective IDEATION.
Leaders have the opportunity foster a team’s Collective IDEATION through very specific methods, such as:
Building emotionally intelligent teams who exhibit and practice compassion and empathy.
Creating diverse teams by including individuals with a variety of experiences, beliefs, and world views in order to enhance innovation.
Including both men and women on teams. Both genders embody critical, yet differing approaches to problem solving. This blend allows for expanded thinking by design. In today’s increasingly competitive markets, leaders must astutely create and lead teams that out think others and innovative at rapid rates through Collective IDEATION.
