There are many ways to influence people. Leaders need to mindful of the type of influence they have, especially in the workplace. One can easily cross into negative influence in order to push results. This happens when one is leading with an inward-facing perspective. Meeting our needs at the expense of others is negative influence and is not sustainable.
Leaders who strive for meaningful influence know that they need to operate with an outward-facing perspective. They think about the needs of all parties involved and intentionally engineer a path from beginning to end. Those first steps might be simple conversations, but they can be used to build up to greater things.
