When an employee with a track record (a pattern) of poor performance comes to you and explains why they don’t want to do this or that part of their job – they are sending you a message. This is an opportunity for you to really listen and to do right by them and your organization.
If you are paying attention, you will realize that they are actually saying, “I am not historically a hard worker now and I don’t want to continue to do the job duties for which I am being paid. Will you please let me continue down this unproductive road but pay me at the same rate? Surprisingly, many managers agree to do this and at a great cost to their company and their engaged staff.
In fact, for every $10,000 spent on payroll, approximately $3,400 is lost on each actively disengaged employee. Loss in time, energy, focus and morale really adds up, especially when it is not necessary. If we really examine the message that these employees are sending, we realize that they are telling us that they don’t want to continue in the job for which they are currently being paid. Isn’t it time to listen? Isn’t it time to free up their future?
